Current Information:Born & Enlisted-London Ypres Town Cemetery
On 24th April, 1917, an enemy plane flew low over th HQ of 29 Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery close to the church of St Jacques at Ypres. This information must have been relayed back to the German guns because at 8.30am a large shell hit the church and did considerable damage to the building and some nearby ammunition carts. Twenty minutes later a second shell landed and killed two men,one of them being Frederick Appleton who had just started out checking the telephone lines. |
